While we started with videos and books (Alona Frankel's series, which is very nice) to get the mood going, I purchased one of the "aqua dolls"
where basically the water goes straight through. Don't waste your money! It's not convincing to a skeptical two year old.
So, I ordered The Potty Patty Kit , STUDIED the guide, and in 2 intense weekends following the guide to the letter, wouldn't you know it? It worked! (I am a working mom 62 miles away from my home!), my daughter "got it" all in one fell swoop. Pee, poo, day and night. I realize I was very lucky.
I recall in mid-July 2006, Bernadette was in pull-ups to visit her Nana at Jamestown, VA. Her "I did it" Dora the Explorer official "Big Girl" potty training certificate is dated August 6, 2006. I can count on one hand the number of accidents she has had since then.
My advice? Do it in the summer. Do it now. The freedom of being "sans diapers" is, in this mom's opinion, the best thing since giving birth! Plus you save $20. (at least) a week.
Prepare to be silly and enjoy the process .
Also be prepared for your child wanting to "show off" his or her new skill. I recall her needing to check out potties around town for awhile as the novelty had not yet wore off!
I'm never embarrassed - only proud when I hear "Mommy, I need to go potty."
I proudly take my daughter's hand and I feel the envy of the other preschool parents with kids still in diapers.
BTW, my daughter is quite petite and had no problems. She's only 28-30 lbs. at 3 years, 5 months.
She was trained using Potty Patty at 2 years, 7 months.
With gratitude,
